Singer 7258

Singer is almost certainly the best-known sewing machine company in the United States. People who have never threaded a needle in their lives know the Singer name. Manufacturing machines for all levels of sewing expertise, Singer has given sewers the ability to create one-of-a-kind garments and accessories for over 165 years.

Consumer Digest Best Buy award

And this commitment to sewing has been rewarded. The Singer 7258 Stylist Model Sewing Machine is a two-time winner of the Consumer Digest Best Buy award. This prestigious award from the well-known consumer advocate magazine is determined based on criteria that include ease of use, performance, quality of construction, styling, efficiency, features, terms of warranty, and required maintenance and service.

The Singer Stylist 7258 lives up to these honors with an impressive list of features, accessories and capabilities. Further, overwhelmingly positive online reviews support the validity of the awards received.

An LED bulb illuminates the sewing area and stays cool even after hours of use.

Although this is a computerized machine, meaning that the stitch patterns are controlled digitally, it does not have the capability to be connected to a computer. The user is limited to the built-in stitches and cannot install any other patterns. However, the included stitches can be customized by adjusting the stitch length and width, which is done via an LED display, clearly marked selection buttons and an audible tone that confirms stitch settings.

Automatic Features

singer 7258 stylist control panelThread tension and presser foot pressure settings are controlled automatically. This ensures balanced stitching and feed regardless of the type of material used or how many layers of fabric are being stitched.

A nice feature, called Electronic Auto Pilot, lets the sewer skip the foot pedal and sew with a Start-Stop button and speed control lever on the face of the machine.

Another useful function of the Singer 7258 sewing machine is the programmable up or down needle position switch. Simply press a button and the needle will always stop in the down position, facilitating pivoting around corners or appliquéing.

A very comprehensive collection of sewing necessities comes with the 7528. The types of presser feet included with this machine are:

Included Presser Feet

  • zipper
  • all-purpose
  • buttonhole
  • overcasting
  • embroidery and darning, blind hem,
  • rolled hem
  • gathering
  • satin stitch
  • quarter-inch foot for quilting or any other project that requires a very narrow seam allowance such as baby clothes.

More Accessories

As in most free arm machines, a storage compartment is built in for accessories. These include bobbins, an assortment of needles, caps for the thread spool, an extra spool pin with felt disc, a darning plate, small screwdriver, a seam ripper and lint brush combination, a foot pedal, a power cord, flexible slip-on dust cover, an instruction manual printed in English, Spanish and French, and a DVD covering introductory and basic usage information.

This is a reasonably priced, general purpose machine for the sewer who wants to be able to add decorative stitching and accents to garments and accessories but does not intend to do extensive embroidery.

While this is a computerized sewing machine, no particular technical skills are needed except the ability to push buttons to change stitches, widths and lengths rather than with levels or dials. The LED display screen is small but readable.

Its size, 14.5 by 7.5 x 12 inches, makes this a compact machine and the weight of 14.6 pounds means it can be easily carried to different work areas using the built-in handle. Including a DVD and also a printed Quick-Start guide makes this an excellent choice for the novice sewer who wants a little more than a basic beginner’s sewing machine.
